Approval of the November 2009 minutes: Liz approved and seconded by Patricia.  Motion carried.

Business Arising from the Minutes:

a.) Parent education – Kelly Humphries really enjoyed the parent presentation before Christmas on anxiety.  It would be nice have more attend these presentations.  A discussion followed on how H&S could communicate times and promote participation with our parents.

b) Cultural event - Donna & Andy is planned for elementary.

c) Wellness Grant- We received our wellness grant.  $500 was given for Drums Alive.  (This would be for Grades 3 and up). This was from the Lunenburg County Community Health Board.  Liz will work with Phys. Ed teachers to schedule this.

d) Concert flowers- Picked up and paid for the band and elementary concerts.  We will do something for Laurel at the end of the year.

e) Pace Car Update.  They now have a pace car deputy program.  This seems to be more for a class to take on.  It involves kids of certain grade levels to promote the program and to be “deputies”.  Liz to present this information to elementary staff meeting. A curriculum is involved.

e) Fundraising - We agreed on Penny Parade in February.  Our goal should be $1000.   Not sure what the incentive will be.  We will do designs again.  Prizes for P-3, 4-6 and 7-9.  (Junior high could be done by TAG groups).  Prizes for this will be Sundae parties.  Boxes and papers from the bank of Montreal will be handled by Patricia F.  We also need somebody to take deposits.  Liz will take the money to the bank with some help and to come up with a date for the students to make designs.

The wood raffle will run for the months of March and April .  It is delivered in Lun. County only.  Suzanne to do the lottery forms  and template for the tickets and Tina will cut the tickets.   Shelly will come help print these tickets.  First prize is 6 cord of wood or $480.  Second prize is $100 and third is $50.  The student that sells the winning tickets will get $50, $25, and third prize $15.  Students that sell books of tickets will have a chance to win two draws of $50 each.

Correspondence :  Winter I walk to School event information was shared.   We will keep this going in the fall

Committees:

a)Treasurer’s Report- We have money and paid for listening centre and flowers.

b) Principal’s Report-   We had a very good Remembrance Day assembly.  Report Cards went home for first term and term tests went well. Our band performances in December were excellent.   Thanks for the flowers, the concerts were very well done.  The last day of school in December we continued the singing Christmas carol traditions.  We are continuing to track behavior incident reports and working on our school accreditation goals. Our basketball season is in full swing with many teams in Elem and Junior.  Our volleyball teams did very well.  We have a new library technician.

c) Staff Rep – Accreditation goal # 1 has the staff reading a book about boys and girls learn differently.

New Business:

      a) Take the Roof  Off Winter event to be held on Sunday January 31th from 3 – 5 pm.  Our home and school could be visible and promote this event for the community.

Bayview Home & School Minutes

October 5 , 2009

Present: Jessica Barry, Patricia Foran, Ron Doucet, Linda McCauley, Tina Hennigar, Wendy Butler, Lisa Myra, Della Rhuland, Suzanne Lohnes-Croft, Liz Brideau-Clark

Regrets: Shelly Bishop

Call to Order : Welcome, Approval of the Agenda,

Approval of the June 2009 minutes. 1st by Jessica Barry, 2nd Linda McCauly, motion carried.

Request : Bonnie Veinotte: Request by the grade 4 teachers in need of a listening station. There is one in the library but it is being used so often it is difficult to get. This one could be purchased for the grades 4-6 level, posted at the grade 4 room and signed out from there. There is one in Brodart’s catalogue for $235.00 includes headphones, case and it plays tapes and CD’s. This request was discussed after Ms. Veinotte left. It was felt this purchase was a good idea. The listening station will be housed in the grade 4 classrooms but used for all of their grade 3-4 wing. 1st Tina 2nd Wendy, motion carried. Bonnie will arrange for the order and when the bill comes in the Home and School will pay.

Business Arising from the Minutes:

Events check list: This was sent to everyone as an attachment. It is an excellent document that should be referred to at each event. It is a living document that should be updated after each event.

Most improved Student Award sponsored by the Home and School was received by Devon Lohnes and presented at the June Awards Night.

Prom photos were taken by Tina Hennigar. The students loved the set up and many photos were used in the yearbook. The video Tina created was enjoyed at the meeting.

Pizza Lunch: Very successful! All enjoyed the pizza, especially the young Primary that was not sure if he liked "free" pizza or not. Scotsburn donated all the ice cream again.

Fun Day has been postponed to the ½ day of parent teacher.

Sports Equipment Exchange was a great idea although we weren’t incredibly successful. We would like to remarket this idea at another time. Perhaps skates would be a good focus?

Pace Car - The new RCMP officer is Ash Flemming. The speed checks were never completed so we will not be able to have pre/post information. The signs are up. This was a successful initiative.

Treasures Report: $3421.00 after Pizza Day. The prom photo receipts are still to come in, under $200.00. There is $1000.00 being set aside for spontaneous cultural groups to come to Bayview

Committee Reports

Principal Report:

We are in year 2 of Accreditation. The teachers all met at the in-service to plan for the year.

PEBS is continuing to be positive and the teachers are using yellow and blue cards to record issues In the school

The focus of this year’s PD for Bayview teachers is on boys because our report card data showed there is a discrepancy in success between girls and boys in our school.

Many sports are in full swing

Cafeteria is doing pre-orders and it is successful. For the first 10 minutes of junior high it is preorder lunch only which has made the lineup much quicker. No money is exchanged in this time so all servers can serve.

The Learning Centre is a new concept at Bayview. Anne Wilson is the teacher that oversees the students. Students attending the Learning Centre require higher level academic and behavioral programming.

Teacher’s Report:

The year is going well.

Students in the junior high did a survey in their Teacher Advisory Groups (TAG) and they reviewed the results this week. The survey was shown at the meeting. Students were positive about their school but also highlighted areas they feel there are needs. In the next TAG time students will suggest ways to address those needs and TAG time will be used according to students’ suggestions.

Correspondence:

Safe Crossing Week is in October, put on by Safe Kids Canada and CN Rail. . .but we do not have any rails to crossL but they are great fro hikingJ

New Business:

Fundraising: The Wood Tickets are always successful. We could sell them in April and May instead of just April. Suzanne will ask Craig if the dates can be extended. Tickets will stipulate the wood delivery will be for Lunenburg County only.

Grocery tapes are not being collected this year because there is no local grocery store that is supporting this.

Jessica Barry suggested we sell tickets and parking space for the band concerts. Elaine suggested this be a Bay Boo silent auction item.

Suzanne presented a fund raising idea which would involve selling pins. It was not felt it would be well received.

Cotton Candy was discussed as a no. Way too messy.

Penny Parade in February

Parent Education: Stress/anxiety/phobias/school phobia seemed to be a concern of some parents. There is a doctor at the IWK, Dr. Bianca Horner, who has written books about anxiety is willing to put on talks about how to help your child have coping mechanisms and to deal with fears. Tina has her e-mail address and will make a contact for a presentation in November.

I Walk to School – Thurs October 22 Start at the Eclectic Garage 8am. We are registered in the National "I Walk to School Day" Last year parents dropped off the students and then Craig and Ron walked with the students back to the school.

Goals for 2009/10

The accreditation survey from parents showed that parents are concerned about healthy living and safety/well being. It was felt this might be a good goal for the Home and School(H&S)

A brain storm ensued:

Food fairs were discussed, a dietitian could talk about lunches, H&S could pay to have someone to take a course and then train others in the building about the same issue. Commotion Program in Newfoundland was discussed which educate parents and children about healthy lifestyles. Dept of Recreation can come in and run workshops. South Shore Regional Health has grants which would have to be completed this month. Perhaps we could apply.

It was decided the goal would be: This year the H&S will focus on parent and student education for Bayview community wellness which will encompass body mind and soul. 1st by Tina 2nd Lisa motion carried.

Next meeting: Monday November 2, 2009 7pm

Meeting Ajourned 8:35pm
